Trip Reports / 5/16/15

I paddled/fished today at Beck Lake. I pulled up right when the gate was opening and headed straight to the ramp and dropped my canoe in.  The water was like glass. I started fishing my way around the lake and it didn't take long for me to hook up with a small bass. I ended up going 7 for 10 on the fish with the biggest being a 16 incher. I had 2 big fish come unhooked after a brief battle. All but one of the fish came on a Zoom fluke fished weedless without any weight.

The geese were out and I saw some of the babies swimming with their parents.

This was my most productive day ever at Beck but it is probably because fishing is usually easier this time of year. I plan on going out again on 5/20 so if you see a white Bell Merlin II out on the water it is me. ~JOE~

i had a nice morning today at Beck. I caught 4 bass and missed 4. The weather was absolutely perfect with minimal wind and I am always appreciative of all the birds that are there. The fish were 12,13,15, and one big girl at 19 inches. ~JOE~

The moment after Michael Triem's kayak capsized in Lake Michigan's icy waters, he had to make a life-or-death decision. He asked himself, "Should I swim back to shore?" He was three-quarters of a mile from land. He wasn't wearing a wetsuit. The water temperature was 36 degrees. He was hyperventilating from the cold and shock. While treading water, he searched for his teenage son, who paddled his own kayak about 20 feet away. Triem deserted his sinking kayak and swam toward his son...
